What should you know?
You are given a 30 day grace period after expiry to renew your vehicle’s registration. In this time period, the drivers can fix the damage on the vehicles, if any, so that it passes the inspection test. This is the reason why the insurance policies have 13 months long validity.
Earlier a fine of Dh10 per month was charged if the car registration was not renewed after the 30 day grace period. However, after April, drivers caught with expired car registration have been charged with Dhs500 and confiscation for seven days (if it has been expired for over three months).

Step 1: Check for Registration Blocks
The first step that you should take before renewing your registration is to ensure that you have paid all the fines on the vehicle. You can pay the outstanding traffic fines through the RTA website or Dubai traffic or you can also pay the unpaid fine at the time of registration. In case there are any pending black points on your vehicle, you will have to clear that first.
Step 2: Prepare all necessary documents
Gather all necessary documents that are required in the process of renewal. The documents that you need are your Emirates ID, driving license, vehicle insurance, car test certificate and old registration card.
In case, you are not the owner of the car which means you have hired a car in dubai or driving a rented car in dubai make sure to bring the documents of the original car owner.
Step 3: Vehicle Test
In order to obtain a vehicle test certificate, you will have to visit RTA vehicle visiting centres. Although new vehicles are exempted for first two years from testing, but after 2 years they also require a test certificate to renew registration. Testing will ensure that your car is fit for the road and its tyres, steering, chassis, suspension systems are in good condition.
Step 4: Insurance renewal
Contact your insurance company to renew your vehicle insurance, if in case it has expired. You should ensure this before applying for vehicle registration renewal in Dubai.

There are three ways to renew your vehicle registration: By applying online, visiting the office in person or through an insurer.

Renewing your vehicle’s registration online
The steps to renew your vehicle’s registration through online mode are online:
- Login to the website of RTA (rta.ae)
- Click on Drivers and Vehicle
- Select your vehicle
- Submit the relevant documents
- Pay renewal fees and unpaid fines, if any, via e- payment
- Confirm Delivery method
After following all the above steps, you can print the temporary vehicle registration notice. Don’t forget to put this notice in your car. Your application will be processed within 5 working days.
There are two ways of how you want to receive your permanent registration card: by courier or you can collect it from RTA or even deliver to your PO Box.
Visiting the office In-person
You can also apply for the registration card by visiting the registration centre. Pay your vehicle registration fee and get your renewed card. You will also be provided with a sticker that comes with a new expiry date, which you will have to put that on the number plate.

Getting someone else to renew your car’s registration
Have no time for this? You can also hire a person to do car registration on your behalf. RTA Personal Appearance lets you do it. You can visit RTA customer service centre and after registering your details you will receive a pin on your mobile phone. You can authorize a person to use this pin so that he can carry out the registration process on your behalf. This pin can also be used to carry out transactions like transferring, selling or exporting the number plate. This pin is valid for one visit only and after the pin expired you will need to generate a new pin through RTAs Personal Appearance Service.
